Busseto Library, 10 October – 21 December 2024
The Busseto Library preserves around a hundred letters and notes that Giuseppina Strepponi, Giuseppe Verdi’s second wife, addressed between 1861 and 1895 to Don Giovanni Avanzi, former parish priest of Vidalenzo and canon of the Collegiate Church of Busseto, as well as one of the dearest and closest to the Verdi spouses, whom they esteemed for his vast culture.
The most significant of these, for their ideological and religious content, for the testimonies of charity and for the references to national and local politics, will be exhibited in the Monumental Halls of the Library, together with some letters from her sister Barberina and Countess Clara Maffei, as well as two notes from Verdi himself. The exhibition does not neglect Verdi’s artistic chronology, which is always in the background, such as the adventurous trips to Russia, to St. Petersburg in 1861 and 1862 on the occasion of the first performance of La Forza del Destino. The exhibition is also enriched with some reproductions of the not very frequent pictorial or photographic images of the companion, consort and friend who was next to Verdi until November 1897 and who rests next to him in Milan in the Retirement Home for Musicians.
The exhibition can be visited until Saturday 21 December 2024 every second Sunday of the month on the occasion of “Marvelous library” and every Saturday afternoon at 4.30 pm
